What are Magnetic Drum Separators? What Type of Applications are They Used In?

Magnetic drum separators are constructed of a rotating non-magnetic steel or manganese shell around a stationary internal magnet structure. As the product stream passes the drum, any ferrous metal or other magnetic material is drawn by the internal magnet to the surface of the drum shell. As the shell rotates, the separated material is held until it is moved past the magnetic area where it is released for collection.

Magnetic drum separators are a low maintenance, self-cleaning option for removing ferrous from flowing material streams. Used in applications from bulk powder processing to car shredding facilities, solid waste, foundry slag and mining magnetite or other ferrous/magnetic ores. Dings offers a model to fit your separation needs.

Why Dings Uses Permanent Magnets for Their Magnetic Drum Designs.

Dings Company’s permanent drum magnets outperform electric models. This is because they are always operating at maximum efficiency while electric versions can lose magnetic strength as the temperature of the coil rises during use. Permanent magnets don’t require a power source for their magnetism, making them more cost effective. Permanent magnet models also require less maintenance. Just lubricate the bearings and drive chain. Dings PC and FC magnetic drums are available in ceramic or rare earth magnet versions while Deep Draw Drums are only offered in ceramic.

Dings PC Model Magnetic Drum Separators

The Type PC magnetic drum is often used in applications like bulk powder and granular material processing as well as separating and gathering ferrous metal from recycling streams. The PC drum mounts easily with a pillow block bearing and shaft clamp and can be fed manually or integrated into an existing production system. The PC Drum comes in a choice of standard (radial) or agitating (lateral) pole designs. Dings radial drums are built using our unique DFC (Dings Flux Control) circuit design that uses blocking magnets in between the poles to redirect magnetic flux lost in conventional magnetic circuits to where it can be used for work. This gives our radial drums a stronger, deeper, more uniform magnetic field making them more efficient and effective. Dings PC model drums are available in diameters ranging from 12 to 24 inches wide.

Dings FC Model Magnetic Drums, Available in Single or Multi-Stage

Dings FC model magnetic drum separators are our PC models but with a dedicated housing structure and drive. FC type drums are available in single, double or triple stage arrangements. Multi-stage FC drums can be constructed uniformly as a single magnetic material type or using a succession of ceramic or rare earth magnets at each stage to fit your application’s needs.

Dings Deep Draw Drums for Heavy Duty Ferrous Separation

Dings Deep Draw Drums are specially designed for heavy duty, high-volume ferrous recovery. Our Deep Draw Drum has the rugged construction needed for separating ferrous metal from the material stream in automotive shredding, scrap metals, municipal solid waste, wood waste, slag, recycling crushed ore, ash at mass burn-out plants, and more. The Deep Draw Drum can be fed at multiple positions since the internal magnet assembly is adjustable. Dings Deep Draw Magnetic Drums are available in diameters ranging from 24 up to 60 inches wide.
