Magnetic Drums

Magnetic Drums can be installed inside closed chutes, at outlets of chutes and hoppers or where materials discharge from feeders and conveyors. Drums are continuously self-cleaning. During operation, a non-magnetic shell is driven around an internal stationary magnet. Material to be separated is fed against or near the revolving stainless-steel shell. The ferrous metal is magnetically drawn out of the material and held against the revolving shell. Then the ferrous is discharged at the other side of the drum, which is no longer in the magnetic field. The non-magnetic material falls away in a normal trajectory.

Dings Flux Control (DFC) Circuit Design

Dings Flux Control (DFC) Circuit Design was a breakthrough in the design of Permanent Magnets. It eliminates internal leakage between magnetic poles and improves separating performance.

Other “conventional” magnetic circuits contain air of filler material between the magnetic poles; this allow flux (magnetism) to leak out and be wasted. In the DFC design, blocking magnets are strategically positioned in the spaces to working force, which makes the magnet more efficient.

The overall strength of the magnet is improved in three ways:

  1. The magnetic field is stronger
  2. The magnetic field extends deeper
  3. The magnetic field pattern is more uniform

Dings Deep Draw Drums are self-cleaning, permanent magnets specifically designed for heavy-duty, high-volume ferrous recovery (heavy-duty applications). Their design outperforms electric-powered models and always operates at top efficiency while maintaining a constant magnetic strength throughout the day. Its rugged construction is ideal for separating ferrous metal from material in shredded cars, scrap metals, municipal solid waste, wood waste, slag, recycling crushed ore and ash at mass burn-out plants. Deep Draw Drums have heavier duty construction than permanent drums. The shell is protected with a thick manganese wear cover, which can withstand the punishment of continuous pounding by a steady flow of heavy objects. The Deep Draw Drum can be fed in multiple positions since the internal magnet assembly is adjustable.

Permanent Drums Outperform Electro Models

Deep Draw Drum’s permanent magnet design outperforms electric-powered models by always operating at top efficiency and maintaining a constant gauss or magnetic strength throughout the day.

The electro drum loses some magnetism and separating power as the coil heats up during operation. This reduction in magnetism from startup to the operating temperature reached several hours later can be as great as 30%. The result is a drop-off in metal recovery.

The Deep Draw Drum emits a very powerful, even magnetic field. It costs nothing to operate and does not require a rectifier, generator, switch gear or wiring. There are no magnet coils to burn out.

Feed Arrangements

The Deep Draw Drum can be fed in any position since the internal magnet assembly is adjustable. The drum is easy to install on general contractor I beams. After mounting, the magnet arc is adjusted to match the feed location. Feed position can affect the purity of the recovered metal contaminants. In the top feed position, for instance, ferrous attracted to the drum can entrap nonmetallic material against the drum shell, with both being deposited on the ferrous side of the splitter.

Up and Over

Up and Over

Ferrous is lifted out of the burden and carried up and over the magnet while the nonferrous material drops off the feeder. This feed arrangement minimizes the amount of entrapped nonferrous material and produces a clean ferrous product.

Down and Under

Down and Under Feed

This arrangement has the shortest and most direct transfer area for the ferrous and is often recommended for material with large and heavy pieces of ferrous.

Top Feed

Top Feed

Often used with ferrous material that is weakly magnetic or with feed that contains non-ferrous pieces too large to pass through a reasonable gap.

Permanent Drums

Permanent Drums

Permanent Drums are used in a wide variety of applications. They are designed to continuously remove large quantities of ferrous metal for product purification or to concentrate and reclaim metals in material. Dings Permanent Drums are designed to be easily integrated into existing production line.

Type PC Drums – Do not have a drive motor or housing, mount easily with pillow block bearing and shaft clamp, choice of standard or agitating poles and can be fed by integrating into production systems

Type FC Drums – Come furnished with a drive motor, feed leveler, splitter and housing, multiple drum arrangements are available and easy lubrication with removal of sealed cover plates on both sides of housing

The housing assembly is an enclosed structure designed to more easily implement the drum into your application. The housing assembly includes a drive, leveler and splitter. The top and bottom of the housing is flanged with a set of mounting holes

Multiple Arrangements
Stainless-Steel Cleats

In these configurations, two or three (or more) drums are used. They can be the same type of drum or differing diameters and magnetic material. The burden will be processed three times in these models, to maximize separation performance
